What are the Differences Between Using a TASER Energy Weapon and Pepper Spray?
Hi, I'm David Wright, Chief Instructor for TASER Training.
TASER Devices vs Pepper Spray
Today we're going to look at OC (Oleoresin Capsicum) spray versus TASER devices. Both are solid self-defense choices with proper training.
Pepper Spray Causes Pain Compliance
OC spray (also known as pepper spray) is an inflammatory agent used to inflame the mucous membranes of the eyes, nose, ears and mouth.
When I spray it, my goal is to spray it directly into the eyes and it'll cause pain (pain compliance) shutting the eyes. Which is very valuable to me because when the eyes shut, I can then move and hopefully flee the scene safely. Again, it is a pain compliance device, and its primary goal is to inflame the mucous membranes of the eyes, nose, ears and mouth. Shutting the attacker’s eyes gives me a viable option to flee from a violent attacker.
TASER Devices Cause NMI (Neuromuscular Incapacitation)
TASER devices certainly cause pain, but they cause neuromuscular incapacitation. When I utilize this TASER device, I will shut down the entire central nervous system. And it will affect the sensory nerves (i.e. cause pain), but it will also affect the motor nerves. By shutting down the body, it gives me a viable escape route also.
Again, both are highly effective, but both require training. So seek training. We highly recommend the training from the certified instructors of the USCCA.
