Hi, my name is Briana and I've been a police officer for 25 years.
I was introduced to my first TASER device, I believe in 2006, through my agency.
It was a completely different aspect of trying to get someone in custody. A lot of officers didn't utilize it as much as we should have. But over time, with the different tools and the different models that they've produced, some officers are more dependent on it now more than they thought that they would be.
As a female in law enforcement, it gives the female officers one other option because of the physical limitations and the physical offset that we have with most of the offenders that we have to handle. It kind of evens the playing field a little bit and it gives us another option other than having to have another officer there to help us.
It's a great tool. And just the advancement in both sides of it, law enforcement and in the civilian world, it's phenomenal the steps that they've come. I can't imagine not having it as an option.
I actually purchased one of the first personal units for my mom.
When I became a police officer, she didn't like the fact that I carried a weapon with me everywhere. She didn't understand why. So I finally got her to agree to let me buy a TASER for her. So she has one of the civilian TASERs and she carries it with her everywhere.
She feels safer. She lives by herself. She's up in her years, so she feels more free to go and do what she wants to do and not have to ask somebody to go with her. She doesn't really worry about the time of day or where the event is located, because she always has that with her. So it gave her a bit more freedom to move about and do what she wanted to do.
